| New Detroit (DTW) Class B Proposal - Comment Period Ends 9/6/10 |
 |
 |
 |
Overview: The FAA has begun the process of proposing changes to the Detroit (DTW) Class B airspace to accommodate new traffic patterns with now four parallel runways, and the future growth anticipated at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (KDTW). This process often can take a year or more to complete. The DTW process has reached the stage of Public Hearings & Comments on the proposal. The Public Hearings were 7/20-22 (See FAA Notice of Public Meetings). The Comment Period for anyone to now respond to or raise any questions/issues on the Formal Proposal (See below), ends September 6th 2010. Comments should be sent to:
Mr. Roger McGrath
FAA ATO Central Service Center
Operations Support Group, AJO-2C2
2601 Meacham Blvd.
Fort Worth, TX 76137
Formal/Final Proposal (July 2010) Clearly the FAA considered the comments & input received during the informal Ad-hoc Process (See below) which resulted in their revised Formal Proposal now being put forth. Most significantly for the SE Michigan Soaring Community is the notable reduction of the 30NM 6K' ring/ceiling being proposed. It also revised the shape of the outer rings and ceiling over Meyers Divers (3TE) and our friends at Skydive Tecumseh based there. Here is the Formal Proposal depicted as PDF's on both the VFR Flyways Chart and the Terminal Area Chart. In addtion, here are the Formal Hearing Slides shown during the public meetings to explain the need.
Note: the proposal is based on the DXO VOR as the center and not the standard reference point on the airport that the existing Class B and 30NM Mode C Veil are currently based on. This explains why some of the lines and curves do not line up, and is not a printing error.
Informal DRAFT Proposal (Pre July 2010)The initially proposed Detroit Class B changes (6MB) reviewed during the Informal Committee process included several significant revisions including a new 30NM radius ring from 6K up to 10K feet which could have impacted areas & airports that we regularly soar to and over. It would have forced us under this 6,000' ceiling in these areas. In addition it would have forced other GA traffic outwards into the area heavily trafficked by gliders and down into our altitudes too.
As a result of the Informal process, the ad-hoc committee formed of interested aviation organizations potentially impacted by this proposal, including our Adrian Soaring Club, concluded by delivering the attached Ad-Hoc Committee Comments & Recommendations to the FAA for consideration. As part of this, was ASC's response indicating the Soaring Impact
Summary: We thank the FAA and particularly the staff of the DTW Tower for their consideration & involvement in the process to date, and their help here in making these documents available for you to review. Please be sure to submit any/all comments & questions you might have on or before September 6th, 2010. We will update this article with the latest progress. Thanks |

We're trying it out as a way of pushing quick news bytes, schedule changes, first solo news, even pictures, out to the club & public, or short news items from around the world & web related to soaring/flying. We can do this literally from the field, heck even from the gliders (passengers only!) with just cell phones and without a PC to update the site. How do you find us?
